Wound Healing

Wounds need oxygen to heal. Exposing a wound to 100 percent oxygen can accelerate the healing process. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for certain types of wounds that are slow to heal due to poor circulation. These include delayed radiation injuries, soft-tissue infections, crush injuries, and diabetes-related wounds. Our Wound Center has two hyperbaric oxygen chambers to assist the healing process.

How Does It Work?

In hyperbaric oxygen therapy, you breathe 100 percent oxygen while lying in a pressurized chamber made of clear acrylic. You will be able to see and communicate with our hyperbaric oxygen therapy technician, who will be in the room with you at all times during your therapy session to monitor your condition and operate the hyperbaric chamber.

How Long Do Therapy Sessions Last?

Each therapy session will last about two hours. You will be able to sleep, listen to music, or watch TV or a movie to pass the time during your therapy session.

How Many Sessions Are Required?

The number and frequency of therapy sessions will depend on your wound and how well it responds to therapy, but it is not uncommon to have one therapy session per day, Monday through Friday. Most patients receive between 30 and 40 treatments.

Does It Hurt?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not painful. In fact, most people find it relaxing! As the air pressure in the chamber is increased at the beginning of your session, you may feel some uncomfortable pressure in your ears. This will be similar to what you might experience when flying in an airplane. Swallowing, yawning, and opening and closing your mouth can help to relieve this pressure. Once the chamber reaches the appropriate pressure, you should be very comfortable.

Is It Covered by Insurance?

Medicare has approved coverage for hyperbaric oxygen therapy for certain types of non-healing wounds. Most private insurance companies follow Medicare rules. We will review your insurance plan with you before therapy starts to make sure you know what your costs will be.
