Herniated Discs

Between the vertebrae of your spine are soft discs. They let your spine twist and bend, and they absorb shocks. But if damaged, the disc’s soft center can push through the disc wall. That’s called a herniated disc. This bulge presses against nerves in your spine.

A herniated disc occurs when the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a tear or weakness in its tougher outer layer. The spinal discs sit between the vertebrae and act as cushions that help absorb shock and support movement. When a disc herniates, sometimes referred to as a “slipped” or “ruptured” disc, it can press on nearby nerves, leading to pain or other symptoms.

Symptoms of a herniated disc vary depending on its location and severity. Some people experience localized neck or back pain, while others may have radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs if nearby nerves are affected. Herniated discs can result from age-related wear and tear, sudden injury, or repetitive strain.
