What to Expect
When you schedule your polysomnogram, we will send you an information packet. It will include a log for you to record details about your waking and sleeping, as well as caffeine and alcohol use, for one week prior to your sleep study. It will also include a questionnaire for the people who live or sleep with you.
Report to the sleep clinic at your scheduled appointment time. Parking is available in front of the building. Bring your completed sleep log and questionnaires, comfortable pajamas, a favorite pillow, and any toiletries you’ll want in the morning.
After you check in, a polysomnographic technologist will attach sensors to your head, chest, and legs that will record your brain activity, breathing, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, as well as eye and limb movement while you sleep. Then you will go to sleep.
The technologist will observe as you sleep. If the technologist notices that you stop breathing during your study, they may connect you to a device that delivers continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The sleep study will resume to see if CPAP helps you sleep without interruption.
Most sleep studies are complete by 6:30 a.m. The technologist will share results, observations, and recommendations as soon as all the data is collected.
