Scholarship Recipients

Sanken-Hatz Scholarship

Our longstanding Sanken-Hatz Scholarship was founded thanks to the generosity of Carl Sanken, a farmer from the Biscay area, Don Hatz, a farmer and postal clerk from the Glencoe area. Since its inception, many others have contributed to this fund. This opportunity is for students pursuing healthcare careers with a preference for patient-facing roles. Multiple recipients will be selected, and the average award is $1,000 per student.

Carver Family Scholarship – NEW!

This donor-funded Carver Family Scholarship was founded this year! It focuses on a student who desires to work in a rural setting, is pursuing a healthcare career, and is originally from or has a permanent residential address within the current Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School District. One student will be selected for the $2,500 award in 2025.

Eligibility Criteria
Both scholarships are open to students at all educational levels, including:

  • High school seniors and high school graduates, including non-traditional students
  • Students pursuing degrees at vocational, community, and/or technical schools

As a graduate student, it’s not easy to find financial help for the cost of tuition, housing, and more. I have an added sense of gratitude for the Sanken-Hatz Scholarship Program because it offers support to graduate students and allows us to reapply each year. Thank you!”

The Sanken-Hatz Scholarship means a lot to me. I have received the scholarship throughout the course of my education. As I filled out the scholarship application for the last time, I reflected on my journey to get here. I am excited to be a Physician Assistant, and I hope that I’ve made the Glencoe Regional Health Foundation proud.”
Jaci Tourtellotti

Receiving a Sanken-Hatz Scholarship allows me to make learning my first priority. I hope to become a nurse who is kind and compassionate, and I look forward to creating a genuine connection with the people I’m caring for.”
Ava Heimerl
Nursing
I have wanted to pursue a career in healthcare since I was a little girl. When I was young, Dr. Bob Zajac at Glencoe Regional Health was my pediatrician. He inspired me, and I’ve wanted to be like him ever since.”
Marissa Brinkmann
Biochemistry/Pre-medicine
The Sanken-Hatz Scholarship reinforces my commitment to giving back to my community. The recognition from Glencoe Regional Health Foundation inspires me to uphold the values of excellence and service, and I hope to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals through occupational therapy. The scholarship support is not just an investment in my education, but also in the future health and well-being of the community. I am eager to serve.”
Rachael Weber
Occupational Therapy
Rural communities, like those served by Glencoe Regional Health, are a critical access point for medicine. Many times, the people who staff the clinics and hospitals are people who grew up in the area or grew up in a rural community like it. It is, therefore, critical to support scholarship efforts like this one to encourage our youth in their pursuit of medicine at all levels, so that we can continue providing excellent care to the people and places we love.”
Jamie Vergin
Physician
Being a Sanken-Hatz scholar means that I will never be okay being a bystander. I won’t shy away from new opportunities because they make me uncomfortable. And I will try to leave each place I work in a better place than when I started.”
Majkya Metcalf

Being a Sanken-Hatz Scholar, especially now that I attend Emory University School of Medicine, illustrates just how much my hometown community still supports me! I hope my experiences let other rural students know that there is a wide world available to practice medicine.”
Samuel Stresemann

These scholarships represent unity within the healthcare field. Healthcare workers must work together to serve patients. And this scholarship encompasses and celebrates some of the many careers needed to accomplish that goal.”
Josilynn Tonn
Radiologic Technology
In the future, I would love to work as a physical therapist in a rural setting. Physical therapists have a unique opportunity to develop relationships with patients due to longer treatment times and more frequent visits. And physical therapists can provide education, treatment, and referrals to communities that do not have easy access to the care they need.”

Dentistry is the right career for me because it combines my interests in science, art, and compassion. Once I graduate, I aspire to practice general dentistry or orthodontics in Minnesota, and one day I would like to own my own dental practice.”

By receiving this scholarship, I am able to focus on my education instead of the financial portion. Thank you for helping me reach my goal of becoming an RN!”

Rosa Ramirez
