Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. Sciatica is not a diagnosis itself, but rather a symptom of an underlying issue that is irritating or compressing the nerve, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or disc degeneration.
People with sciatica often experience sharp, burning, or shooting pain on one side of the body, which may extend from the lower back into the leg or foot. Other symptoms can include numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness. The severity can range from mild discomfort to significant pain that interferes with daily activities.
