Less Pain, More Gain

For years, pain was an unpredictable part of daily life for Wanda Holt.

“It was always there, but if I did anything physical, it would flare up,” she said. “Then suddenly I couldn’t do anything I needed to do.”

After gastric bypass surgery, Wanda experienced ongoing complications that led to years of pain, frequent vomiting, and serious health challenges. What frustrated her most was the inconsistency in her pain, often varying in intensity. Everyday tasks like cleaning or lifting could quickly lead to setbacks.

“I didn’t want to rely on strong pain medications,” said Wanda. “I wanted to feel like myself.”

In searching for a better way, she connected with our pain management team and began working with Joslin Thiemann, APRN, CNRA, NSPM-C.

“She listens and works with you,” said Wanda. “We’re a team, on the same page.”

Together, they built a plan focused on managing pain while supporting her goal to continue doing things she enjoyed. Through treatments including trigger point injections, cervical epidural steroid injections, and cervical spine radiofrequency ablation in her neck, she began to notice a meaningful change.

Radiofrequency ablation is one option used to treat pain in the neck, back, and joints. The procedure targets specific nerves and uses heat to interrupt pain signals, helping reduce discomfort while the nerve heals.

Patients typically begin to feel the full effects within about four weeks, and relief can last up to two years, though symptoms may gradually return over time. Wanda has undergone two ablation procedures, which are performed without incisions and with light sedation so patients can remain comfortable while still able to communicate during the procedure.

Today, Wanda is back to handling everyday activities without the same cycle of flare ups. She continues to see Joslin as needed for maintenance care, including occasional trigger point injections to help manage her symptoms.

“I still have some pain, but it doesn’t control my life anymore,” Wanda said. “The biggest thing is the consistency. I can plan my days and do normal tasks without worrying about that same level of pain.”

For patients experiencing chronic pain, there are options for relief – often more than they realize.

“You do not have to suffer, and you do not need to travel to the metro for help,” said Joslin. “We’re proud to offer high quality, comprehensive pain management care right here in your community.”

For Wanda, her treatment has meant more than pain relief. It’s meant getting back to daily life with confidence, staying active, and knowing she has a care team who listens. With the right support and the right plan, managing chronic pain becomes less about limitations and more about moving forward.
