Stay Active This Winter: Tips from Our Physical Therapists

With the sun setting earlier and the snowfall around us, it might seem more difficult to stay active in the winter, especially set in the midst of a pandemic. However, there are plenty of ways to get moving and get active while staying safe this season.

Check out tips from our physical therapists on how to stay active – and have fun – during the pandemic this winter.

Clark-Christianson

Tip: Check out the Panther Field House.

Clark Christianson, PT, ScD, COMT: I am happy to now be able to exercise and play basketball at the Panther Field House. I’m looking forward to being able to watch my son and daughter play high school basketball at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School in the next couple of months – it provides me with something to look forward to each week. I also have been getting out to ice fish each week while enjoying the peace of the outdoors.

Jennifer-Keenan

Tip: Run on the trails vs. the treadmill.

Jennifer Keenan, PT, MPT: I opt to run outside, maintaining distance from others so I don’t need to mask, instead of working out in the gym with a mask. I also enjoy sledding with the kids!

Jenni-Keltgen

Tip: Find an at-home routine.

Jenni Keltgen, PT, MPT: I have a workout space in a spare bedroom in my house – I use it to stick to the weightlifting and bicycle routine I’ve created. I have also been walking the “3-mile loop” at the Arboretum.

Erin Sauter

Tip: Explore local recreation spaces.

Erin Sauter, PT, DPT: Find an adventure! I love exploring Buffalo Creek Park with my kids! There are plenty of recreation spaces and state parks to explore in Minnesota, where you can easily get outdoors and safely distance from others.

Lexi-Schons

Tip: Enjoy the winter wonderland.

Lexi Schons, PT, DPT: I love taking the kids sledding in the winter! It’s a great way to get out of the house and have some fun together, all while staying active.

Dorothy-Tevis

Tip: Turn family time into active time.

Dorothy Tevis, PT, MHS, ATC, CLT: I really enjoy making snow angels, throwing snowballs, and sledding with my 2-year old granddaughter. Staying active while spending time with family is a win-win!
