Our emergency medicine physicians are here 24/7 to help patients who need immediate medical care for life and limb threatening conditions and symptoms, such as:
- Burns
- Breathing difficulty
- Broken bones
- Chest pain or pressure
- Head or neck injury
- Heavy bleeding / bleeding that won’t stop
- Intense pain
- Loss of consciousness
- Motor vehicle crash injury
- Overdose of drugs or alcohol
- Poisoning
- Seizures
- Severe allergic reaction with trouble breathing, swelling, hives
- Sudden inability to speak or difficulty speaking
- Severe injury
- Sudden confusion
- Weakness or drooping on one side of body or face
What to Expect
We use a process called triage to determine which patients need the most immediate medical attention. Patients with the most urgent medical conditions are seen first, regardless of arrival time.
When you arrive to the hospital, a nurse will take your vital signs and assess the severity of your condition. If you need a lower level of care, you will be seen in Urgent Care.
Registration is completed after the triage process for emergency care in McLeod County.

We know emergencies happen fast. If you are able, bring the following items with you to the emergency department to help us give you the best care.
- Photo ID (driver’s license, state ID card, or passport)
- Insurance card(s)
- List of medications and supplements currently taking, and how much of each
- List of medical conditions
- List of allergies
- Names of your healthcare providers
- Emergency contact name and phone number
About our Emergency Department
- Staffed 24/7 by physicians
- Designated as a Level IV trauma center by the Minnesota Department of Health, confirming our readiness to receive and stabilize patients with severe injuries
- Is the hub of our stroke care services. We provide 24/7, on-the-spot access to a diagnostic neurologist at United Hospital through Allina Health’s telestroke program and have been designated an acute stroke-ready hospital by the Minnesota Department of Health.
- Provides advanced life support ambulance service in partnership with Allina Health. Their paramedics are qualified to begin the process of diagnosing, stabilizing, and treating patients before they arrive at the ER.
