Helping children

Develop and Thrive

Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language therapy each play a unique yet complementary role in supporting children’s growth and development. Physical therapy focuses on enhancing strength, balance, coordination, and gross motor skills, helping children achieve milestones like crawling, walking, or running, and improving mobility for those with physical disabilities or injuries. Occupational therapy centers on fine motor skills, sensory processing, and daily life activities, enabling children to perform tasks such as writing, self-dressing, and using tools. Speech-language therapy addresses communication challenges by improving speech clarity, language comprehension, social communication, and feeding or swallowing skills. Together, these therapies foster independence, confidence, and holistic development, empowering children to reach their full potential in academic, social, and personal settings.

Pediatric Therapy Erin and Patient

Pediatric therapy includes a wide range of specialized services that help children develop the ability to perform tasks involved in daily living, so they can be successful at home, at school, and in the community. There are many reasons why a child might need some form of therapy. These include:

  • Developmental delays, such as when a child is not reaching milestones
  • Complications of pregnancy and childbirth, such as prematurity or cerebral palsy
  • Congenital conditions, such as cleft palate or Down syndrome
  • Injuries such as a traumatic brain injury or a stroke

How can I get a referral to pediatric therapy?

Make an appointment with a primary care provider in our family medicine department or pediatrics department to discuss any concerns about your child’s physical abilities or speech-language skills. Your child’s provider can treat underlying medical conditions and provide a referral for therapy as appropriate to your child’s needs.
